Explore the Underground Railroad as you travel the three-trail tour in southeast Indiana. Start at one of the three Gateway sites or hop on anywhere in between to discover the rich tapestry of stories gathered from slave narratives, stories and court cases. Along the journey, learn about the people, routes traveled and safe houses as you visit the numerous stops, museum exhibits and historic sites throughout the scenic fifteen county tour.

Alexander McClure Underground Railroad Historic Marker

Not a railroad at all, but a means of escape for fugitive slaves, Jackson County was but one of the stops on this secretive line. Visit the freight house and learn how in April 1860, Alexander McClure, a fugitive slave from Nashville, Tennessee, was discovered in a shipping crate in Seymour, Indiana.
